Schooling in Tenerife

24/11/2004 12:47:46

Wingate School opened in October 1982 with 7 children and has grown so that there are now over 260 children in the age range of 4 -17 years.

Wingate School has been inspected by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate and is an officially recognised British school. As a result of inspection, it is authorised by the Spanish government as a British school in Spain which apart from establishing the legal right to exist also means that studies taken at Wingate can be convalidated with the Spanish system. This authorisation is valid for children up to the age of 18 years.

Since 1988 the school has been a recognised centre for the University of Cambridge examinations and also a centre for the Royal Society of Arts CLAIT (Computer Literacy and Information Technology courses.)

The following subjects are offered at International General Certificate of Education: Mathematics, Co-ordinated Science (double subject), Geography, English Language, English Literature, Spanish, French, and Art. English is taken as a first language and Spanish and French are taken as foreign languages.

The number and range of subjects makes children eligible for the I.C.E. certificate (International Certificate in Secondary Education).

Computer Literacy and Information Technology are offered in the senior school.
History is taught to the end of year 9, music to the end of year 8 and Drama to the end of year 9. Physical education is taught throughout the school. On the site we have a large sports hall/gym/theatre, a swimming pool and two playground areas for volleyball, netball and cricket and other activities.

The school is divided into three parts which are:
The Infant Department - children aged four years before 1st September up to the age of seven years plus.
The Junior Department - children aged seven years plus to eleven years plus.
The Senior School - children aged eleven years plus - seventeen.

The main aim of the school is to provide a balanced education comparable to good schools in Britain. We follow a slightly modified form of the National Curriculum. Teaching Spanish to the juniors (4 or 5 lessons a week) means that less time is available to cover all the National Curriculum subjects. We do not follow Technology throughout the National Curriculum, but do teach many aspects of it, such as model making, crafts, computers, etc. The History curriculum includes a study of Spain and the Canary Islands, plus a complete chronological development of Britain from Roman times to 1990. These studies are completed by the end of year 9. Children sit the standard assessment tests (SAT’s), which are sent from the U. K. each year for years 2, 6 and 9. For years 6 and 9 the completed tests are returned to the U.K. for marking. Parents are then aware of their own child's progress compared to the children in the U.K. Mid year school reports are also given at the end of January and again in June.

The day is from 9.00am to 3.45pm. The school year comprises of the first term: September 8th (approximately) with a week’s half term in the week which includes November 1st. The second term commences January 8th (approx) to Easter (the half term break coincides with 2 or 3 days of Carnival.)
The Easter break is approximately 2 weeks. The Summer Term is from Easter to June the 25th (approximately) with no half term break.
